Gurgaon summers are hot and dry, and the mistake owners make is treating the heat as something to get through rather than something to plan around.
March: move the routine
Shift the main walk to before seven in the morning now, while it is still optional. A dog that has already adjusted by April is far easier than one being forced to change in May.
April to June: the hard months
Water everywhere the animal goes, refreshed twice daily. Exercise at either end of the day only. Test the ground with the back of your hand before walking - if you would not kneel on it, do not walk a dog on it.
Watch for heavy panting that does not settle within a few minutes of rest, bright red gums or unsteadiness. Those are heatstroke signs and they need a vet immediately, not monitoring.
July onward: humidity replaces heat
As the monsoon arrives the problem changes from heat to damp. Dry the animal properly after walks, check between the pads, and keep bedding dry. Skin trouble in NCR starts in July and gets noticed in August.
Indoors
A cool tiled corner out of direct sun is usually enough. Air conditioning is not required, but shade, airflow and water are.
