Living with a dog on a Gurgaon builder floor: what actually matters

17 Sep 2026 1 min read 28 views
Stairs, polished tile and lift access decide more about a dog's first year in Gurgaon than the breed does.

Most of Gurgaon lives above the ground floor, and most dog advice is written for houses. The three things that decide how a dog settles here are the stairs, the flooring and whether the lift works.

Stairs before the joints have set

A puppy should be carried down stairs for the first several months, not raced down them. Repeated descent on a growing skeleton is one of the few genuinely avoidable causes of later joint trouble, and a builder floor with four flights makes it a daily event rather than an occasional one.

If you are on a high floor with a reliable lift, this is largely solved. If the lift is unreliable, factor that into the breed you choose - a large breed you will be carrying is a different commitment from a small one.

Polished tile is the quiet problem

Hard, glossy flooring gives a dog no grip. A puppy that slides braces awkwardly every time it corners, and over months that adds up. Runners or rugs along the routes the dog actually runs - hallway, kitchen doorway, the turn into the living room - cost very little and solve most of it.

Heat, and the hours that are usable

From March onward the usable walking hours in Gurgaon shrink to early morning and after dark. Ground that feels warm to your palm is too hot for paws. A dog will keep going well past the point it should, so the limit has to come from you.

What this means when choosing

A calm, medium or small breed suits a builder floor better than a high-drive large one, regardless of how much you like the look of the latter. If you are out eleven hours a day, be honest about that before committing to fifteen years.
